The following Jeep adventures are day tours that leave from Siem Reap, Cambodia. Siem Reap is famous for the Angkor Wat temples, but there is so much more to the country when you go beyond the temples and get out of the main tourist areas.

1. Jeep Journey Tour to Beng Mealea Temple & Floating Village

Experience the beauty of the Cambodian countryside, the intrigue of Beng Mealea temple, and the fascinating floating village of Kampong Khleang on a full day Jeep Journey. The tour will take you off the main roads so you can experience the rugged nature and tranquility of the Cambodian countryside. Traverse  along back roads, go through remote villages and cross rice fields as you make your way to the overgrown jungle temple, Beng Mealea.

Most of the temple’s history remains unknown, but it can be dated by its architectural style, similar to that of the Angkor Wat era. Scholars believe it was built in the 12th century. Today, much of the temple is engulfed by the natural forest surrounding the area making it a great place to explore as you discover this ancient treasure.

The tour journeys to the Tonle Sap Lake, to visit the stilted and floating village Kampong Khleang. The community is the largest on the lake with a population reaching 10,000 inhabitants. This floating village is further from Siem Reap than other villages on the late which makes it much better preserved and a more natural environment where locals go about their everyday lives. This is truly a fascinating and unique community to visit and should not be missed on a trip to Siem Reap.

 

 2. Jeep Excursion Tour to Kulen Mountain Waterfall and Buddhist Monastery

Go to where it all began, Kulen Mountain National Park (Phnom Kulen). This sacred area is considered the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire and a holy mountain in Cambodia. It was here that King Jayavarman II proclaimed the Khmer Empire independent and himself as a godlike King in 804.

The tour will take you to the waterfall where you can swim in the pools under the falls.  We will visit the river that has 1000 carvings etched into the riverbed. The waters are regarded as holy. Jayavarman II bathed in the river and had the river diverted so that the rocks could be carved with thousands of fertility symbols.

The tour also visits Preah Ang Thom, a 16th century Buddhist monetary with a large reclining Buddha carved into the rocks; the largest of its kind in Cambodia. Kulen Mountain is notable as the area where the stones for the Angkor temples were quarried. In more recent times during the 1970’s, the area was a Khmer Rouge stronghold. Today, it’s a fascinating area to explore on a jeep excursion.

 

3. Jeep Explorer Tour to West Boray Lake, a silk farm and a forgotten temple in the countryside

Experience the Cambodian countryside, a boat ride on an ancient hand-made lake, the silk farm and a forgotten temple on the Jeep Explorer tour. See first-hand the process of the Cambodian silk production and discover how silk is traditionally worked in Cambodia. The silk farm gives you an insight into one of the oldest crafts in Cambodia.

Visit West Baray, an 11th century hand-made lake built during the Angkor era. Recent studies reveal that the lake was built primarily as a symbolic function  depicting of the Hindu Sea of Creation. Today, many locals visit the lake to swim or relax in bamboo huts on the waters edge.

Along the way you’ll pass through remote villages and drive along rice fields to  gain a better insight into the rural life and culture. The tour also visit a forgotten temple in countryside that was used as a Khmer Rouge outpost.
