Sabai Culture Program

The Sabai Culture Tours take you on the path to where it all began. The Culture Tours are for those wanting to gain a better insight into the life and history of the Cambodian people. We will show you a country that has endured so much yet has so much to give.

Many of the techniques applied by artists, craftsmen and religious practitioners have been handed down from one generation to the next over the course of  thousands of years. Many of these techniques are still being used today in Cambodia. Sabai Culture would like to share this traditional heritage with you.

Origin Tour $35

approx. 3-4 hours
Half day tour – choose morning (8:30am start)  or afternoon (1:30pm start)

The Sabai Origin tour is a half day tuk tuk tour to the heritage of Cambodian culture. Discover the origins of Khmer arts, crafts and spirituality. The tour includes 3 of the following visits in this historically important program to give you a greater understanding of Cambodia’s long history.

All our Culture tours are limited to be sensitive of the local scene and are offered on limited days and numbers of people.

Please choose between the Bokator class (option 1) and the Apsara School (option 2).
Tour departs in the morning and afternoon on selected days. Inquire about availability.

ANGKOR STONE MASONS
Sabai Culture takes you to a renowned and 3 time award winning stonemason workshop and school where some of the top carvers in Cambodia preserve their ancestors’ trade.

The workshop was featured on the History Channel as scholars tried to uncover the mysteries behind the temples and carvings of the Khmer Empire. You will see carvings in various forms, from large natural uncut block, to the incredible detailed finished work.

The techniques are very similar to those that were used to create the wonderful carvings adorned on the temples of Angkor. This workshop works closely with restoration projects preserving the temples of Angkor.

 

MONK HOUR
Cambodia is a deeply religious Buddhist country, Religion impacts so many aspects of Cambodia’s culture and history. Your Sabai Culture tour will take you to a local pagoda where you will meet a monk.

You will be shown around the pagoda and talk about the significance of the various religious monuments and paintings to give you an insight about the life and after life of Buddha. He will answer any questions you may have regarding Buddhism and life as a monk.

 

 

BOKATOR SCHOOL (option 1)
Discover the ancient Cambodian martial art of Bokator. The martial art nearly went extinct under the Khmer Rouge regime. Some of the masters survived and continued to teach this historic part of Cambodian history.

You will visit a local training centre, where the master will talk about the history of Bokator and its importance in fighting invading armies throughout history. You also will receive an introductory lesson and learn some of the techniques of the martial art. Bokator warriors can be seen on many of the Angkor temple carvings.

 

APSARA SCHOOL (option 2)
Apsara dance is a classical, graceful dance performence in Cambodia to narrate historical stories. The performance is done in elegant, handmade costumes and can be seen in many establishments in Siem Reap today.

The tour to the Apsara school takes you behind the scenes, to where it all begins. You will see the young performers being trained from an early age in this important art in Cambodian history. As you are shown around the school, you can see various classes at different levels as they train to become the next generation of Apsara performers.

Local Tour $30

approx. 3 hours
Half day tour – choose morning (8:30am start)  or afternoon (1:30pm start)

This Local tour takes you to the National Silk Centre and the extraordinary man-made reservoir West Baray.
You will learn about the silk production from the raw material to final product, such as the elegant costumes for the Apsara dance performances.

As the tour continues you make your way to the ancient water reservoir West Baray. A boat will take you to the island as you explore the temple West Mebon. Relax on the beach in hammocks and go for a swim before enjoying a scenic countryside tuk tuk ride back to town.

NATIONAL SILK FARM
Experience a guided tour through the National Silk Centre and see first hand the process of the Cambodian silk production. From the raw meterial to the intensive hand work, witness the several steps involved in creating high quality silk products.

You will discover how silk is traditionlly worked in Cambodia, the silk worm lifecycle, tie-dyeing and weaving. The Silk Centre gives you an insight about one of the oldest crafts in Cambodia.

 

WEST BARAY & WEST MEBON
The extraordinary man-made reservoir invites you to discover and explore the island with the remains of an 11th century temple, West Mebon.

After the exploration and the boat ride you will have time to relax at the beach in hammocks and enjoy the sunset. The tuk tuk will take you on a scenic countryside tour on the way back to town.

For those who want to enjoy a full day, combine both tours, Origin Tour & Local Tour from the Sabai Culture Program  or,combine one tour from the Culture Progrm with a countryside Moto Adventure through rural Cambodian.  Here are some options to make it a full day out:
