An Intro From the Founder

Through our blogs, we hope you can get a better understanding of who we are, what we do, and what Sabai Adventures Cambodia is all about. Our blogs are intended  to give our company a more personal touch, so that you can get to know us better. We also want to share our insight and knowledge of Cambodia with you so that you can make the most of your visit to the county.

Sabai Team members Siem Reap CambodiaIt is our hope that we can  share the Cambodian experience with you in an honest and direct approach. I feel this is often lost in the tourism industry through glossy brochures, catchphrases and sophisticated  marketing campaigns. This is Cambodia and I truly feel it’s a country that needs to be experienced first-hand.

It’s a country with a very long history that extends back thousands of years, long before the Khmer Rouge regime. The history is full of ups and downs, triumphs, and defeats. This small Southeast Asian Kingdom built the largest religious monuments on earth that are still standing today, more than a thousand years later. This is a testament to the country and its people. We believe in promoting a genuine and real cultural experience with all the tours we operate.

Many areas of Cambodia, away from the hotels, tourist attractions and souvenir shops, is still a rugged country. It’s a country at the cross-roads between the old world and the new, where people still have this amazing skill to work with their hands, such as the silk weavers and rice farmers, yet at the same time, it’s a country that is being pulled into the economic boom that is taking place in Asia. However, Cambodians are often reluctant to change, which preserves many of the traditional techniques and ways of life. This is what we want to share with you. In a modern world that often moves so fast, too fast, it’s a beautiful and fascinating experience to see another way, a way that has been preserved from one generation to the next for centuries.

We are a team of Cambodians, with the exception of  me. I’m from Canada but have lived here for a significant time. Time does fly. I have been fortunate to travel much of the world and have always had this desire to see what’s just beyond the next road or mountain or, in Cambodia, the next rice field. This is how I started Sabai Adventures Cambodia. I began by exploring the countryside and visiting villages with my Cambodian friends and loved it.

There are no postcard snow capped mountains, and Siem Reap is a long ways from any picturesque beach, but there’s something about the rugged countryside, the red clay roads, the traditional way of farming rice, or maybe it’s simply the smiles of the locals I encountered, but I was hooked.

We are a dedicated group that are proud to represent this country with every tour we do. Our philosophy is to combine a fun day out with a cultural experience. We have various tour options and set routes but no two tours are the same. We work hard not to be a cookie cutter tour operator, there’s too many of those around and it’s not our style. Our guides will stop in random places along the way to explain things, like a local wedding taking place or an elder making rice wine. I always tell our team, “It’s your country, it’s your culture, share it with the world. People come from everywhere  to visit your country, so show them the real Cambodia that you know”.

Our guides are the true ambassadors of Cambodia. They spend most days living and exploring the countryside, showing people what Cambodia is like outside of the tourist areas, sharing their culture and customs along the way. I am very proud of the guides they’ve become and I am honoured to work alongside them.

We love this country and feel it is our duty to share it with visitors in a respectful, sustainable and honest way.  We want you to enjoy your time out with us and leave Cambodia with a positive impression about the people and the culture, because the true beauty of Cambodia is in its people.

Thanks and we hope to see you in Cambodia,

Scott
